What are ultrasounds?

Ultrasounds are an essential part of our commitment to providing safe and effective care for women at every stage of life. Ultrasound imaging uses high-frequency sound waves—rather than radiation—to create clear pictures of the inside of your body, making it especially safe for women’s health needs.

During your ultrasound appointment, one of our skilled providers will gently apply a special gel to your skin and use a small device called a transducer to examine the area of interest. This technology allows us to visualize reproductive organs such as the uterus and ovaries, monitor the health and development of your baby during pregnancy, and assess other important structures like the bladder or kidneys.

Ultrasounds are used for a variety of reasons, such as detecting gynecological conditions, evaluating pelvic pain, guiding fertility treatments, and ensuring both you and your baby are healthy throughout pregnancy. Because ultrasounds are non-invasive, generally painless, and provide immediate results, they are an invaluable tool in our women-centered approach to care.

If you have questions about ultrasounds or would like to schedule an appointment, our caring team at Women’s Wellness MD is here to support your health and wellness.

Why would I need an ultrasound?

An ultrasound is a special way for doctors to look inside your body without making any cuts. It uses sound waves, too high-pitched for us to hear, to create live pictures.

You might need an ultrasound for several reasons. If you’re pregnant, it’s a common and important step to check on the baby’s growth, make sure everything is developing well, and even determine how far along you are.

Beyond pregnancy, it helps doctors understand what’s causing symptoms like pain or swelling. For instance, if you have belly pain, an ultrasound can show if there’s an issue with organs like your gallbladder, liver, or kidneys. For women, it’s often used to look at the uterus and ovaries if there’s unusual bleeding or discomfort. Doctors can also use it to check lumps in the breast, examine the thyroid gland in your neck, or even see how blood is flowing through your veins and arteries. It’s a safe and effective tool because it doesn’t use radiation and provides immediate images.

How long does an ultrasound take?

Ultrasound exams typically take between 20 and 30 minutes, depending on the type of ultrasound you are having. Routine procedures, such as a pelvic ultrasound or pregnancy ultrasound, generally fall within this time frame. However, more specialized ultrasounds, like detailed gynecological imaging or Doppler studies, may take up to 45 minutes due to the level of detail required and the area being examined.

When you arrive for your ultrasound appointment, you may be asked to change into a gown for your comfort and to allow easy access to the area being examined. A gentle, water-based gel will be applied to your skin to help facilitate the capture of high-quality images. This gel is warm and is used to ensure that the ultrasound probe can move smoothly over your skin while transmitting sound waves to create detailed images.

While most ultrasound exams are quick and efficient, your provider will inform you if your specific situation requires more time. At Women’s Wellness MD, we understand the importance of making your appointment as comfortable and stress-free as possible. Our team of experienced professionals is dedicated to providing you with the highest level of care while ensuring that you are well-informed throughout the process. Your comfort, care, and peace of mind are always our top priorities.

How do you prepare for an ultrasound?

We understand that preparing for an ultrasound can bring up questions. Our team is here to support you every step of the way and ensure you have a comfortable experience. Preparation steps may vary depending on the type of ultrasound you are scheduled for, such as pelvic, obstetric, or abdominal ultrasounds.

General Preparation Guidelines:

Clothing: We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to your appointment. You may be asked to change into a gown provided by our clinic, depending on the area being examined.

Dietary Instructions: For certain ultrasounds, like abdominal scans, you may be asked not to eat or drink for several hours beforehand. This helps us obtain the clearest images for your evaluation.

Full Bladder: For pelvic or pregnancy ultrasounds, you may be instructed to drink water and arrive with a full bladder. This can significantly improve the quality of the images and assist your provider in making an accurate assessment.

Before Your Appointment:

Medications and Medical Conditions: Please inform your provider of any medications you are taking or any health conditions you have. This information can impact your preparation and ensure your safety during the procedure.

Arrival Time: Arrive a few minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork or additional preparations.

Questions or Concerns: Your comfort and understanding are important to us. If you have any questions or concerns about your ultrasound, feel free to reach out to our team before your appointment.

By following the specific instructions given to you by your Women’s Wellness MD provider, you help us deliver the most accurate and useful information for your diagnosis or ongoing care.
