Hysterectomy & Alternatives Q & A

What is a Hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy is a form of surgery that removes a woman’s uterus. The uterus is where babies grow after impregnation, meaning that if a hysterectomy is performed, you’ll no longer be able to get pregnant or give birth. Hysterectomies aren’t performed for minor reasons, however; Dr. Okasi only suggests hysterectomies as a way to avoid potentially life-threatening conditions and save the woman’s life.

Why Would I Need a Hysterectomy?

Dr. Okasi recommends hysterectomies in order to treat a variety of potentially life-threatening diseases and conditions. Some more severe cases that require a hysterectomy are uterine, cervical, and ovarian cancer. By removing the tumors and uterus, the woman’s life is spared from a long battle with cancer.

Dr. Okasi may also recommend a hysterectomy for other complications, including endometriosis, fibroids, and uterine prolapse. Endometriosis is a condition in which uterine tissue grows outside the uterus, causing health complications that make it difficult to become pregnant. Fibroids are tumor-like growths that can cause pain and bleeding within the uterine walls. Further, uterine prolapse is a condition in which the uterus drops into the vagina.

What are the Risks and Complications of a Hysterectomy?

Hysterectomies are generally very safe, but all surgical procedures come with the risk of further complications. These complications, though rare, can include heavy bleeding and blood clots in the legs or lungs. The possibility of infection is also present, and nearby organs can be injured.

That’s why it’s important to visit Dr. Okasi, an experienced specialist in women’s health who performs hysterectomies at the highest level of accuracy and precision.

Are There Any Alternatives to a Hysterectomy?

There are many alternatives to a hysterectomy, but those options depend greatly on why a hysterectomy may be necessary in the first place.

If you suffer from heavy bleeding, endometriosis, and fibroids, hormonal treatment and lifestyle changes are generally recommended if you want to avoid a hysterectomy. Other forms of treatment include uterine artery embolization, or conservative management depending on the severity of your symptoms. As always, a minimally invasive approach is used whenever possible.

It’s important to remember that Dr. Okasi takes all the necessary steps before turning to a hysterectomy.
